FAQs

1. Do I need both MFT Exam Prep Programs now?

It makes sense to get both programs now and save money since you need to take both exams to become a clinically licensed MFT. Save $50.00 with the COMBO package!

2. How Do I Become a Licensed CA MFT?

California has its own governing board (BBS). MFT licensing outside of California is overseen by The Association of Marriage and Family Therapy Regulatory Board (AMFTRB). Once you have your Masters Degree, you must register with the BBS as an Associate MFT and then pass the CA MFT Law and Ethics Exam. Candidates must then accrue supervised work experience: 3000 hours over at least 104 weeks. Then it’s time to take the MFT Clinical Licensure Exam. We always recommend that you review the BBS website (www.bbs.ca.gov) to ensure no new or additional steps are required.

3. Is the topic of law and ethics tested during the CA MFT Clinical Exam as well?

Not only is that topic covered, but more than one-fourth of the questions on the clinical exam pertain to law and ethics. The BBS recognizes that a significant amount of time may pass between the time applicants pass the Law & Ethics Exam and when they are able to sit for the CA MFT Clinical exam. Therefore, they want to ensure that applicants are up to date with current laws and ethical guidelines.

4. What is the difference between the MFT Law and Ethics exam and the MFT Clinical exam? 

The MFT Law and Ethics exam is the first exam required of Associates. The exam’s name gives away the content: it only tests your knowledge of the legal and ethical issues that guide our profession. The BBS requires you to pass this exam prior to renewing your Associate registration. The Clinical Exam also tests your knowledge of law and ethics, but additionally covers topics such as crisis management, treatment planning, treatment, evaluation, and more. Each of our prep programs is comprehensive, containing all the content and strategy you need to PASS WITH CONFIDENCE.

5. What happens if the Clinical Exam changes before I take it?

We guarantee you will have access to the most up-to-date program designed to prepare you for your licensing exam. This means the materials you access will be updated to reflect any exam changes implemented between the time you purchase the course and the time you study and take your exam.
