Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) 

How to become a social worker 

Step 1: Attain MSW from a CSWE-accredited Social Work program
  • make sure to include supervised field training with 1,500 hours of supervised clinical work experience including 500 hours of face-to-face client contact
Step 2: Earn your Educational and Supervised Work Experience
  • Then, once you have your MSW, complete 3,000 hours of clinical social work experience within a 2 year period, supervised by a board-approved CLCSW
  • 1,000 of these hours must be face-to-face clinical work with patients/clients, including DSM diagnosis and treatment
  • Approved clinical settings for gaining this experience can be outpatient mental health clinics and inpatient treatment facilities
  • Once your hours are completed, fill out the Wisconsin social work board’s state application
Step 3: Register and Study for the ASWB Clinical Level Exam with TDC!

Continuing Education Requirements

Pre-licensure - Social workers in WI have the same CE requirements as Licensed Social workers.
License Renewal
  • Renewal Cycle: Every 2 years by February 28 of each ODD year
  • Total Hours Required: 30 hours
  • Must include:
  • 4 hours Ethics

Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT)

How to become a Marriage & Family Therapist

Step 1: Earn Your Degree
  • Master’s in MFT or related field from COAMFTE- or Board-approved school
  • (Must include a supervised clinical practicum or internship, with a minimum of 700 hours, including 280 direct client contact hours)
Step 2: Accrue Supervised Clinical Experience
  • Completion of 3,000 hours of post-degree work experience as an MFT
  • At least 1,000 hours must be face-to-face client contact
  • Must be completed with a training license
Step 3: Pass 2 Required Exam
  • Apply to take the AMFTRB National MFT Exam
  • Exam fee $365
  • Sign up for TDC’s NMFT exam prep course and study with confidence!
  • After passing the written exam, Tennessee requires an oral examination administered by a committee approved by the board.
Step 4: Apply for LMFT Licensure
  • Submit supervised hours
  • AMFTRB exam results
  • Submit official transcripts
  • Pay licensure application fee $75
