Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
How to become a social worker
Step 1: Complete a CSWE-accredited Social Work program
Step 2: Register with the State and Accrue Supervised Experience
- Pass the Vermont Jurisprudence Exam (will need to include printed copy in your application)
- Next, before you begin your social work experience, you must register as a non-licensed and non-certified with the OPR, registration fee $75
- Then, find an OPR-approved supervisor and secure employment as a supervisee
- Complete 3,000 hours of experience.
- 2,000 of these hours must be providing psychotherapy
- Hours must be completed in no less than 2 years and no more than 5
- For every 30 hours, at least one must be face-to-face supervision
- Half of these supervised hours must be done in an individual setting rather than group supervision
- Once complete, have your supervisor complete a Report of Supervision form to be submitted with your application
Step 3: Submit Your VT LICSW State Application
- Apply for your LICSW license, which can be done on the OPR’s online application system.
- $100 application fee
- 3 professional references
- Verification of Social Work Education form
- Report of Supervision form
- Public Disclosure form
Step 4: Register for the ASWB Clinical Exam and Study with TDC!
- Contact the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) to register for the exam, $260 registration fee
- Then, contact Pearson VUE to schedule your exam appointment
- Sign up for TDC’s LCSW Exam Prep program and pass with confidence!
Continuing Education Requirements
Pre-licensure-Social workers in VT have the same CE requirements as Licensed Social workers.
License Renewal
- Renewal Cycle: Every 2 years by January 31 of each EVEN year
- Total Hours Required:
- LICSW - 20 hours
- LMSW - 10 hours
- Must include:
- 1.5 hours Ethics

Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT)
How to become a Marriage & Family Therapist
Step 1: Earn Your Degree
- Master’s in MFT or related field from COAMFTE- or Board-approved school
- (Must include a supervised clinical practicum or internship, with a minimum of 700 hours, including 280 direct client contact hours)
Step 2: Accrue Supervised Clinical Experience
- Completion of 2 years of post-degree supervised practice as an MFT
- In order to complete supervised practice, the applicant must be entered on the Roster of Psychotherapists who are Non licensed and Noncertified
- A minimum of 3,000 hours of supervised practice with individual, couple, family, or group therapy from a systems perspective.
- 2,000 hours must be direct service, half must be with couples and/or families
- 1,000 hours must be continued clinical practice or indirect services
- 100 hours must be face-to-face supervision, with a required 1 hour for every 30 hours of practice
- 50 hours must be individual supervision
Step 3: Pass 2 Required Exams
- Apply to take the AMFTRB National MFT Exam
- Exam fee $365
- Sign up for TDC’s NMFT exam prep course and study with confidence!
- After passing the written exam, Tennessee requires an oral examination administered by a committee approved by the board.
Step 4: Apply for LMFT Licensure
- Submit supervised hours
- AMFTRB exam results
- Submit official transcripts
- Pay licensure application fee $150
