Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
How to become a social worker
Step 1: Complete a CSWE-accredited Social Work program
Step 2: Become a Certified Social Worker (CSW)
- First, pass the ASWB Masters Level exam
- Contact the ASWB to register for your exam
- Complete the application, $230 application fee
- Contact Pearson VUE to schedule your exam appointment
- Then, use TDC’s LMSW Exam Prep: ASWB Masters Level to pass with confidence!
- Once you pass, fill out the Utah DOPL CSW state application. Includes:
- Official MSW transcripts sent in a sealed envelope directly to the Utah DOPL
- Payment of $120 non-refundable application fee
- Official ASWB Master exam score
Step 3: Gain Required Work Experience Towards Your Utah LCSW
- Now as a CSW, accrue 4,000 hours of clinical social work
- 1,000 of which must be mental health therapy training experience
- Supervised experience should be:
- Crisis intervention
- Individual, group, and family therapy
- Intermediate and long-term treatment
- Supervision must be done by an LCSW who has been practicing for at least 2 years\
Step 4: Pass the ASWB Clinical Exam with TDC and Apply for Your LCSW
- Once again, register for the ASWB Clinical Level exam through the ASWB, and select your test location and date with Pearson VUE
- Then, use TDC’s LCSW Exam Prep: ASWB Clinical Level study program to pass with confidence once more!
- Once you pass, fill out the Utah DOPL LCSW state application. This includes:
- An official sealed transcript
- Verification of postgraduate supervision experience
- Official ASWB Clinical exam scores
Continuing Education Requirements
Pre-licensure-Social workers in UT have the same CE requirements as Licensed Social workers.
License Renewal
- Renewal Cycle: Every 2 years by September 30 of each EVEN year
- Total Hours Required:
- LCSW - 40 hours
- CSW - 20 hours
- Must include:
- 6 hours Ethics
- 2 hours Suicide Prevention

Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT)
How to become a Marriage & Family Therapist
Step 1: Earn Your Degree
- Master’s in MFT or related field from COAMFTE- or Board-approved school
- (Must include a supervised clinical practicum or internship, with a minimum of 700 hours, including 280 direct client contact hours)
Step 2: Accrue Supervised Clinical Experience
- Completion of 3,000 hours of marriage and family therapy training experience
- In not less than two years
- Must be supervised under a board-approved supervisor
- Includes 100 hours of direct supervision
- Must include a minimum of 1,000 hours of mental health therapy
- Includes 2 hours of suicide prevention training by a Board-approved provider
Step 3: Pass Required Exam
- Apply to take the AMFTRB National MFT Exam
- Exam fee $365
- Sign up for TDC’s NMFT exam prep course and study with confidence!
- After passing the written exam, Tennessee requires an oral examination administered by a committee approved by the board.
Step 4: Apply for LMFT Licensure
- Submit supervised hours
- AMFTRB exam results
- Submit official transcripts
- Pay licensure application fee $120
Continuing Education Requirements
CE Requirements for Ohio MFTS
License Renewal
- Renewal Cycle: Every 2 years
- Total Hours Required: 40 hours
- Must include:
- 6 hours ethics/law of which 3 are specific to marriage and family ethics/law
- 2 hours suicide prevention
- 15 hours must be directly related to marriage and family therapy
- 15 hours online allowed
