Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
How to become a social worker
Step 1: Attain MSW from a CSWE-accredited school
Step 2: Apply to Become an Oregon Clinical Social Work Associate (CSWA)
- First, fill out the CSWA Application and submit it to the Oregon board of social workers.
- CSWA candidates must fill out pages 8-10 in addition to pages 1-7
- Submit to a criminal background check and fingerprints
- For fingerprints, schedule an appointment with Live Scan
- Use the Fieldprint Code: FPORSocialWorkersDAS
- Complete and pass a drug, alcohol, and substance abuse evaluation & submit it to the Oregon board of social workers.
- Send your official transcript directly from your university to the Board office.
- Pay the application fee of $260
- Lastly, complete the Oregon Rules and Law Exam
Step 3: Accumulate the Required Social Work Experience
- Once you have your CSWA-designation, complete 2 years of supervised experience.
- This consists of 3,500 work hours: 2,000 hours must be direct client hours, and 100 hours must be supervised, with at least 50 being individual.
- After six (6) months of supervision, you must complete a six-month evaluation report from each supervisor.
Step 4:
- Use TDC’s LCSW Exam Prep: ASWB Clinical Level to study and PASS with confidence!
- Once you have accrued 75 hours as a CSWA, you are eligible to sit for the ASWB Clinical exam.
- First contact the ASWB to register for the exam, and then set an appointment at Pearson VUE
- Then, sign up with TDC’s LCSW Exam Prep: ASWB Clinical Level Exam program
Continuing Education Requirements
Pre-licensure-Social workers in OR have the same CE requirements as Licensed Social workers.
License Renewal
- Renewal Cycle: Every 2 years by last day of licensee’s month of issuance
- Total Hours Required: LCSW - 40 hours
- Must include:
- 6 hours Ethics
- 6 hours Cultural Competence
- 3 hours Suicide Assessment, Treatment and Management
- Total Hours Required: LMSW - 30 hours
- Must include:
- 4 hours Ethics
- 4 hours Cultural Competence
- 2 hours Suicide Assessment, Treatment and Management

Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT)
How to become a Marriage & Family Therapist
Step 1: Earn Your Degree
- Master’s in MFT or related field from COAMFTE- or Board-approved school
- (Must include a supervised clinical practicum or internship, with a minimum of 700 hours, including 280 direct client contact hours)
Step 2: Accrue Supervised Clinical Experience
- Completion of 3 years of post-degree supervised clinical experience as an MFT
- A minimum of 1,900 supervised direct client contact hours
- 750 of which must be with couples and families
Step 3: Pass Required Exam
- Apply to take the AMFTRB National MFT Exam
- Exam fee $365

Step 4: Apply for LMFT Licensure
- Submit supervised hours
- Submit AMFTRB exam results
- Submit official transcripts
- Pay licensure application fee $175
