Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) 

How to become a social worker 

Step 1: Attain MSW from a CSWE-accredited school
Step 2: Apply to Become an Oregon Clinical Social Work Associate (CSWA)
  • First, fill out the CSWA Application and submit it to the Oregon board of social workers.
  • CSWA candidates must fill out pages 8-10 in addition to pages 1-7
  • Submit to a criminal background check and fingerprints
  • For fingerprints, schedule an appointment with Live Scan
  • Use the Fieldprint Code: FPORSocialWorkersDAS
  • Complete and pass a drug, alcohol, and substance abuse evaluation & submit it to the Oregon board of social workers.
  • Send your official transcript directly from your university to the Board office.
  • Pay the application fee of $260
  • Lastly, complete the Oregon Rules and Law Exam
Step 3: Accumulate the Required Social Work Experience
  • Once you have your CSWA-designation, complete 2 years of supervised experience.
  • This consists of 3,500 work hours: 2,000 hours must be direct client hours, and 100 hours must be supervised, with at least 50 being individual.
  • After six (6) months of supervision, you must complete a six-month evaluation report from each supervisor.

Continuing Education Requirements

Pre-licensure-Social workers in OR have the same CE requirements as Licensed Social workers.
License Renewal
  • Renewal Cycle: Every 2 years by last day of licensee’s month of issuance
  • Total Hours Required: LCSW - 40 hours
  • Must include:
  • 6 hours Ethics 
  • 6 hours Cultural Competence
  • 3 hours Suicide Assessment, Treatment and Management
  • Total Hours Required: LMSW - 30 hours
  • Must include:
  • 4 hours Ethics
  • 4 hours Cultural Competence
  • 2 hours Suicide Assessment, Treatment and Management

Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT)

How to become a Marriage & Family Therapist

Step 1: Earn Your Degree
  • Master’s in MFT or related field from COAMFTE- or Board-approved school
  • (Must include a supervised clinical practicum or internship, with a minimum of 700 hours, including 280 direct client contact hours)
Step 2: Accrue Supervised Clinical Experience
  • Completion of 3 years of post-degree supervised clinical experience as an MFT
  • A minimum of 1,900 supervised direct client contact hours
  • 750 of which must be with couples and families
Step 3: Pass Required Exam
  • Apply to take the AMFTRB National MFT Exam
  • Exam fee $365

Step 4: Apply for LMFT Licensure
  • Submit supervised hours
  • Submit AMFTRB exam results
  • Submit official transcripts
  • Pay licensure application fee $175
