Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) 

How to become a social worker 

Step 1: Complete a CSWE-accredited Social Work program
Step 2: Submit Advisory Agreement and Gain Social Work Employment
  • First, find a supervisor and complete the Supervisory Agreement Form and submit it to the Board. Complete this form with your clinical supervisor, $25 processing fee.
  • Accrue a total of 3,000 hours of supervised clinical social work in a 2 year period, with at least 1 hour per week of face-to-face supervision (totaling 100 hours)
Step 3: Apply for the New Hampshire Social Work License
  • A completed application booklet, passport style photo, and resume.
  • A non-refundable $150 application fee.
  • A completed Summary of Supervised Clinical Experience form.
  • A completed Supervisor’s Confirmation of Clinical Experience form that has been filled out and placed in a sealed envelope by the supervisor and sent directly to the Board. The supervisor must also complete a professional reference form.
  • 3 Professional Reference form signed and sealed by each reference, and 1 must be your clinical supervisor.
  • Official transcripts from your CSWE-accredited school sent directly to the Board.
  • Proof of passing the ASWB Clinical exam (see more below).
  • Criminal Offender Record Report from each state you have resided and/or been licensed in.
  • If you are licensed in another state and transferring jurisdiction, complete a License Verification form signed and sealed by that state (if applicable).
Step 4: Register for the ASWB Clinical Exam and Study with TDC!

Continuing Education Requirements

Pre-licensure - Social workers in NH have the same CE requirements as Licensed Social workers.
License Renewal
  • Renewal Cycle: Every 2 years by last day of licensee’s renewal month
  • Total Hours Required: 40 hours
  • Must include:
  • 6 hours Ethics
  • 3 hours Suicide prevention

Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT)

How to become a Marriage & Family Therapist

Step 1: Earn Your Degree
  • Master’s in MFT or related field from COAMFTE- or Board-approved school
Step 2: Accrue Supervised Clinical Experience
  • 2 years of post-degree supervised experience as an MFT
  • A minimum of 1 hour per week of direct face-to-face individual supervision
  • 3,000 hours of supervised experience
  • 1,000 must be direct face-to-face client contact with individuals, families, and couples
  • 200 hours must be directly supervised by an AAMFT approved supervisor, or a Board-approved alternate
  • 100 hours of direct supervision during COAMFTE graduate training may be counted towards this post-degree requirement
  • Up to 500 hours of supervised experience during COAMFTE graduate training may count towards this post-degree requirement
Step 3: Pass Required Exam
  • Apply to take the AMFTRB National MFT Exam
  • Exam fee $365

Step 4: Apply for Licensure
  • Submit supervised hours
  • Submit AMFTRB exam results
  • Submit official transcripts
  • Pay licensure application fee $150
