Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
How to become a social worker
Step 1: Complete a CSWE-accredited Social Work program
Step 2: Submit your LMSW application to the Board
- First, fill out the Masters Application for Licensure and submit it to the New Mexico Board of Social Work Examiners. This includes:
- $100 application fee.
- Submit a recent 2x2 passport photo
- Send official CSWE-accredited University transcripts directly to the New Mexico Board of Social Work
- Take and pass (passing is 70% correct) the New Mexico Jurisprudence Exam included in the application
- Must complete and provide verification of one of the following:
- A three credit hour course in New Mexico cultures listed on your school transcript
- A Board approved course, workshop or seminar on New Mexico cultures
- Proof of previously passing the New Mexico cultural examination
- 2 personal character references
- The application must be notarized
Step 3: Register for the ASWB Masters Level Exam and Study with TDC!
- Once approved, register for the Masters Level Exam through the ASWB, registration fee, $230
- Then, schedule your exam with Pearson VUE
- Sign up for our LMSW Exam Prep: ASWB Masters Level Exam program to pass the exam with confidence!
Step 4: Gain the Required Work Experience towards your New Mexico Social Work License
- Accrue 3,600 hours of supervised experience in no less than 2 years from passing LMSW
- Accumulate and document 90 hours of supervision during the 3,600 required practice hours. At least one hour of supervision must be documented for every 40 hours worked
Step 5: Register for the ASWB Clinical Level Exam and Start Studying
- Once hours are complete, contact the ASWB to register and Pearson VUE to schedule LCSW exam
- Sign up for TDC’s LCSW Exam Prep: ASWB Clinical Level Exam program and pass once more with confidence!
Continuing Education Requirements
Pre-licensure - Social workers in NM have the same CE requirements as Licensed Social workers.
License Renewal
- Renewal Cycle: Every 2 years by June 30
- Total Hours Required: 30 hours
- Must include:
- 6 hours Cultural awareness

Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT)
How to become a Marriage & Family Therapist
Step 1: Earn Your Degree
- Master’s in MFT or related field from COAMFTE- or Board-approved school
Step 2: Accrue Supervised Clinical Experience
- Completion of 2 years of postgraduate work experience as an MFT
- Includes at least 1,000 hours of marriage and family therapy clinical contact
- Completion of 200 hours of direct supervision
- 100 must be individual
- 1 hour of face-to-face supervision for every 10 hours of client contact
Step 3: Pass Required Exam
- Apply to take the AMFTRB National MFT Exam
- Exam fee $365
- Sign up for TDC’s NMFT exam prep course and study with confidence!
Step 4: Apply for LMFT Licensure
- Submit supervised hours
- Submit AMFTRB exam results
- Submit official transcripts
- Pay licensure application fee $75
Continuing Education Requirements

License Renewal
- Renewal Cycle: Every 2 years
- Total Hours Required: 40 hours
- Must include:
- 12 hours ethics
- 9 hours supervision for supervisors
- 12 hours online allowed
