Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) 

How to become a social worker 

Step 1: Graduate with MSW degree
Step 2: Pass the ASWB Masters Exam with TDC!
  • Pass the ASWB Masters Exam and earn your LSW license from the Nevada social work board 
Step 3: Apply for your Nevada LSW License
  • $40 Application fee
  • $100 Initial license fee
  • Employment history
  • Background check information
  • Copy of Birth Certificate or Passport proving U.S. citizenship
  • Copy of official government ID (i.e. driver’s license)
  • Completion of fingerprint packet including a $40.20 fee
  • Official school transcripts.
  • Once the application has been completed, submit it to the Nevada social work board for approval and await your LSW license.
Step 4: Accumulate Supervised Work Experience
  • Accrue at least 3,000 hours of post-graduate work.
  • 2,000 of those hours must be face-to-face with patients using psychotherapy as treatment
  • The remaining 1,000 hours of supporting clinical work may include documentation of and case management of these face-to-face hours
  • Must be completed in no less than 2 years and no more than 3 years
  • Once a week for 1 hour, each candidate must meet with their supervisor
  • When your experience is complete, the supervisor must submit a letter to the Nevada Board of Social Work Examiners describing the nature of the work and documentation of the hours.
Step 4: Submit Your Nevada LCSW Application and Start Studying!
  • Copy of a driver’s license
  • Background check and fingerprint submission
  • $40 application fee, and an additional $100 for the initial license. If you wish to practice before taking the exam, there is an additional $70 provisional license fee.
  • Once the application has been processed and approved, contact the ASWB to register for the Clinical Level Exam, registration fee: $260 
  • Then set your exam appointment at Pearson VUE
  • Finally, sign up with TDC’s LCSW Exam Prep: ASWB Clinical Level program to study and pass with confidence!

Continuing Education Requirements

Pre-licensure - Social workers in NV have the same CE requirements as Licensed Social workers. They must complete 30 hours every 2 years.
License Renewal
  • Renewal Cycle: Every 2 years by last day of licensee’s birth month
  • Total Hours Required:
  • LCSW - 36 hours
  • LSW - 30 hours
  • Must include:
  • 4 hours Ethics
  • 2 hours Suicide prevention and awareness
  • 2 hours Cultural competency, diversity, equity & inclusion

Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT)

How to become a Marriage & Family Therapist

Step 1: Earn Your Degree
  • Master’s in MFT or related field from COAMFTE- or Board-approved school
Step 2: Fulfill Intern License Requirements
  • Submit to the Board a contract and plan with a primary and secondary supervisor
  • Pass the exam prescribed by the board after one year of working as an MFT intern 
  • Three letters of recommendation, personal or professional
Step 3: Accrue Supervised Clinical Experience
  • Completion of at least two years of postgraduate experience
  • At least 3,000 hours of supervised experience
  • 1,500 hours must consist of direct client contact
  • 300 hours must be direct supervision
  • at least 160 hours with the primary supervisor
  • at least 40 hours with the secondary supervisor
Step 4: Pass Required Exam
  • Apply to take the AMFTRB National MFT Exam
  • Exam fee $365
  • Sign up for TDC’s NMFT exam prep course and study with confidence!
Step 5: Apply for LMFT Licensure
  • Submit supervised hours
  • Submit AMFTRB exam results
  • Submit official transcripts
  • Pay licensure application fee $150

Continuing Education Requirements

  • Total Hours Required: 40 hours (20 hours per year)
  • Must include:
  • Every 2 years:
  • 6 hours ethics
  • 4 hours suicide prevention
  • 2 hours supervision for supervisors
  • 20 hours distance learning allowed
  • Every year:
  • 3 hours ethics
  • 2 hours suicide prevention
  • 1 hour supervision for supervisors
  • 10 hours distance learning allowed
