Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
How to become a social worker
Step 1: Attain MSW from a CSWE-accredited Social Work program
Step 2: Get Your LMSW License
- First, fill out MS LMSW state application
- $25 application fee
- $50 background check fee and fingerprints
- Official school transcripts
- Passport photo
- Next, contact the ASWB to register for exam, registration fee of $230
- Contact Pearson VUE to pick a test date and location
- Then, use TDC’s LMSW Exam Prep: ASWB Masters Level to pass with confidence!
- Finally, after passing, pay a $100 licensing fee
Step 3: Accrue Clinical Social Work Hours
- A minimum of 2 to a maximum of 3 years of professional experience, which includes:
- 1,000 hours of face-to-face contact with client
- 1 hour per week of direct supervision with a minimum of 100 hours
- Contractual agreement between supervisor and supervisee
- Plan of Supervision approved by the Board
- Complete Verification of Supervision to document your 1,000 hours, and every six-month submit a Supervision Evaluation Form
- At the end of supervision, obtain 3 professional letters of reference
Step 4: Apply for the LCSW License and Pass the Exam with TDC
- Apply for LCSW here: Mississippi social work license form
- $25 application fee, $50 processing fee, in addition to the forms mentioned above.
- Once again contact ASWB and Pearson VUE to get your exam set up
- $260 registration fee.
- Study and pass with TDC’s LCSW Exam Prep: ASWB Clinical Level
- Finally, pay the $100 licensing fee
Continuing Education Requirements
Pre-licensure-Social workers in MS have the same CE requirements as Licensed Social workers.
License Renewal
- Renewal Cycle: Every 2 years by April 30
- Total Hours Required: 40 hours
- Must include:
- 4 hours Ethics
- 3 hours Cultural Diversity/ Multicultural Issues/Cultural Competency
- 1 hour Mandated reporting

Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT)
How to become a Marriage & Family Therapist
Step 1: Earn Your Degree
- Master’s in MFT or related field from COAMFTE- or Board-approved school
Step 2: Accrue Supervised Clinical Experience
- Must include 1,000 hours of face-to-face client contact
- Completion of 200 hours of direct supervision, 50 of which must be individual
- Up to 100 hours of clinical supervision obtained during graduate training may be counted towards the required 200 hours of direct supervision)
- At least 100 hours must be supervised by an AAMFT approved supervisor
Step 3: Pass Required Exam
- Apply to take the AMFTRB National MFT Exam
- Exam fee $365
- Sign up for TDC’s NMFT exam prep course and study with confidence!
Step 4: Apply for LMFT Licensure
- Submit supervised hours
- Submit AMFTRB exam results
- Submit official transcripts
- Pay licensure application fee $100
Continuing Education Requirements

- Must include:
- 4 hours ethics (may not be obtained online)
- 2 hours supervision for supervisors
- 1 hour of mandatory reporting for all professionals
- 6 hours online allowed
