Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) 

How to become a social worker 

Step 1: Complete a CSWE-accredited Social Work program
Step 2: Apply for your LMSW Clinical Conditional Licensure
  • Get your Maine LMSW Clinical Conditional license, so you can begin to accrue work hours towards your LCSW. 
  • First, fill out the state application which includes:
  • $25 application fee, a $70 licensure fee, and a $21 criminal history check fee
  • Official transcript from your CSWE-accredited school
  • Request for Examination (Masters) - included in the application
  • Agreement to Provide Consultation Form - included in the application
  • Official document of successful passing of the ASWB Master level exam
  • Next, contact the ASWB and register for the ASWB Masters Exam, $230 registration fee and a $25 application fee
  • Once registered, contact Pearson VUE to schedule your exam
  • NOTE: Once you submit your LMSW Clinical Conditional application form, you will have one year to pass the LMSW exam or you will need to re-apply and pay all fees again.
  • Now, start studying! Using TDC’s LMSW Exam Prep: ASWB Masters Level Exam program
Step 3: Accrue Hours towards your Maine LCSW License
  • Now with your LMSW - Condition Clinical, you can perform psychosocial evaluation, engage in diagnosis and treatment of mental illness and emotional disorders, with required LCSW/CSW-IP supervision, as well as provide consultation to LSWs.
  • Obtain 2 years / 3,200 hours of supervised social work experience and 96 hours of consultation in clinical social work
  • If you have an MSW with a non-clinical concentration you must complete 4 years / 6,400 hours of social work experience with 192 hours of consultation
  • Once you complete your hours, fill out the LCSW state application. You will need to pay all the required fees again (same as LMSW-Conditional)
Step 4: Pass the ASWB Clinical Exam using TDC and Become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker!

Continuing Education Requirements

Pre-licensure-Social workers in ME have the same CE requirements as Licensed Social workers.
License Renewal
  • Renewal Cycle: Every 2 years (by Dec. 31 of the renewal year)
  • Total Hours Required: 25 hours
  • Must include:
  • Must include: 4 hours Ethics

Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT)

How to become a Marriage & Family Therapist

Step 1: Earn Your Degree
  • Master’s in MFT or related field from COAMFTE- or Board-approved school
Step 2: Accrue Supervised Experience
  • Completion of 2 years of post-degree supervised experience as an MFT
  • 3,000 hours of supervised clinical counseling experience.
  • A minimum of 1,000 hours must be direct clinical contact with couples and families
  • 200 hours of direct clinical supervision, at a rate of one hour of supervision per 15 hours of experience
  • 100 hours must be individual supervision
  • Up to 50 hours of individual supervision may be conducted through live video or audio conferencing
Step 3: Pass Required Exam
  • Apply to take the AMFTRB National MFT Exam
  • Exam fee $365
  • Sign up for TDC’s NMFT exam prep course and study with confidence!
Step 4: Apply for Full LMFT Licensure
  • Submit supervised hours
  • Submit AMFTRB exam results
  • Submit official transcripts
  • Pay licensure application fee

Continuing Education Requirements
