Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) 

How to become a social worker 

Step 1: Complete a CSWE-accredited Social Work program
Step 2: Become a Kansas LMSW with TDC!
  • $100 application fee
  • Official school transcripts
  • 3 professional references 
  • 2 of these references must be licensed at the LMSW level or higher
  • The third reference must be from the on-site supervisor of the final field educational program of the current or most recent social work degree
  • Once your application has been accepted:
  • Register for the Masters exam with the ASWB, registration fee $230
  • Schedule exam appointment with Pearson VUE 
Step 3: Earn Supervised Social Work Hours
  • After passing LMSW exam, apply for supervised social work positions to earn hours towards your clinical Kansas social work license, or Licensed Specialist Clinical Social Work (LSCSW)
  • Find a supervisor, complete a Clinical Supervision Training Plan, and submit it to the Board before you begin your work hours
  • Obtain 4,000 hours of clinical paid work experience within a 2 to 6 year window
  • 1,500 of these hours must be face-to-face psychotherapy and assessment
  • No more than 500 hours can be direct clinical social work services
  • At least 150 hours of direct individual supervision (1 hour of supervision for every 20 hours of social work)
  • Supervisors must be licensed (LSCSW) for at least 2 years
Step 4: Complete the Kansas Social Work License Application
  • Once hours are completed, fill out the Kansas LSCSW state application. This includes:
  • $100 application fee payable to Behavioral Science Regulatory Board
  • 3 professional references
  • 2 must be from LSCSWs
  • The third must be from your most current employment supervisor
  • Supervisors Attestation form (included in application) completed by each supervisor from whom you earned your hours under
  • Copy of official job descriptions from positions held during supervision
  • Completed coursework grid (included in application) outlining graduate coursework taken
Step 5: Take the ASWB Clinical Exam and Pass with TDC!

Continuing Education Requirements

Pre-licensure-Social workers in KS have the same CE requirements as Licensed Social workers.
License Renewal
  • Renewal Cycle: Every 2 years (Must be renewed by the last day of the month of the initial issuance.)
  • Total Hours Required: 40 hours
  • Must include:
  • 3 hours Ethics
  • 3 hours in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders

Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT)

How to become a Marriage & Family Therapist

Step 1: Earn Your Degree
  • Master’s in MFT or related field from COAMFTE- or Board-approved school
Step 2: Accrue Supervised Clinical Experience
  • Cannot begin until after all graduate coursework has been completed with the exception of the thesis
  • Minimum of two years  
  • At least 3,000 hours of practice
  • At least 1,500 hours of direct client contact
  • At least 110 hours of direct supervision equitably distributed throughout 
  • At least 24 hours of live or recorded direct observation of client interaction
  •  A maximum of 50 hours of direct supervision may be obtained through group supervision
  • Direct supervision can occur in person or by using videoconferencing
  • After 110 hours of direct supervision are complete, ongoing direct supervision must continue to occur for the remainder of the supervised clinical experience
Step 3: Pass Required Exam
  • Apply to take the AMFTRB National MFT Exam
  • Exam fee $365
  • Sign up for TDC’s NMFT exam prep course and study with confidence!
Step 4: Apply for LMFT Licensure
  • Submit supervised hours
  • Submit AMFTRB exam results
  • Submit official transcripts
  • Licensure application fee $50

Continuing Education Requirements

  • Must include:
  • 3 hours formal training in ethics
  • 6 hours diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders
  • 40 hours online allowed with posttest; 10 hours online allowed without posttest
