How to become a social worker
Step 1: Graduate MSW program
Step 2: Obtain your LSW License in Indiana
- Fill out the state application here.

- Once accepted, contact the ASWB to register for the Masters Level Exam (LMSW), and Pearson VUE to set exam appointment

Step 3: Accrue Work Experience Hours Towards your Indiana LCSW
- Accrue at least 2 years (3000 hours) of paid full-time social work experience, before applying for your LCSW license
- Qualifying experience must be providing clinical social work services, including assessment and evaluation of clients, in which at least 50% of this time is providing service directly to clients.
- Submit proof of at least 4 hours of face-to-face supervision each month during the two-year period provided by a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW).
- Once completed, submit your LCSW Application to the Indiana Licensing Board for approval

Continuing Education Requirements
Pre-licensure - Social workers in IN have the same CE requirements as Licensed Social workers.
License Renewal
- Renewal Cycle: Every 2 years (Must be renewed by March 31 of each EVEN year)
- Total Hours Required: 40 hours (However, a maximum of 20 hours may be completed in a single year.)
- Must include:
- 2 hours Ethics education including boundary issues (1 hour per year)

Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT)
How to become a Marriage & Family Therapist
Step 1: Earn Your Degree
- Master’s in MFT or related field from COAMFTE- or Board-approved school
Step 2: Accrue Supervised Experience
- With 2 years, 1,000 hours of post degree clinical experience
- 200 hours of post degree clinical supervision
- 100 hours must be individual supervision
- Board approved supervisor must have at least 5 years of experience or equivalent
Step 3: Pass Required Exam
- Apply to take the AMFTRB National MFT Exam
- Exam fee $365
- Sign up for TDC’s NMFT exam prep course and study with confidence!
Step 4: Apply for LMFT Licensure
- Submit supervised hours
- Submit AMFTRB exam results
- Submit official transcripts
- Pay application fee $100
Continuing Education Requirements

- Total Hours Required: 40 hours (20 hours per year)
- Must include:
- 2 hours Category 1 ethics every 2 years (1 hour per year)
- 20 hours Category 1 every 2 years
- 10 hours Category 1 every year
- All hours may be earned online
