Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) 

How to become a social worker 

Step 1: Graduate MSW program
Step 2: Become a Licensed Social Workers (LSW) in Hawaii
  • First, fill out the LSW state application. This includes:
  • Official transcript sent by your college/university directly to the board
  • Pay a $60 non-refundable application fee
  • Next, pass the ASWB Masters Level exam. 
Step 3: Begin Working as a Licensed Social Worker in Hawaii
  • Once licensed, accruing hours towards your Clinical license
  • Complete 3,000 hours of post-graduate supervised clinical social work in no fewer than 2 years, and no more than 5 years. This includes:
  • At least 2,000 hours of assessment, clinical diagnosis, and clinical therapy
  • No more than a maximum of 900 hours of client-centered advocacy, consultation, and evaluation
  • At least 100 hours of direct face-to-face supervision
  • A qualified supervisor must be a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) with at least 4,500 hours of post-master’s clinical social work experience
Step 4: Register for the Clinical Exam and Pass with TDC!
  • Once more, register with the ASWB for your LCSW exam, registration fee $260 
  • Contact Pearson VUE to select your exam location, date and time
  • Return to TDC and use our LCSW Exam Prep: ASWB Clinical Level program to pass once more with confidence!

Continuing Education Requirements

Pre-licensure - Social workers in HI have the same CE requirements as Licensed Social workers.
License Renewal
  • Renewal Cycle: Every 3 years (Must renew by June 30 of the expiring year)
  • Total Hours Required: 45 hours
  • Must include:
  •  3 hours of Ethics
  • Therapist Development Center is an approved provider through ASWB ACE

Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT)

How to become a Marriage & Family Therapist

Step 1: Earn Your Degree
  • Master’s in MFT or related field from COAMFTE- or Board-approved school
Step 2: Accrue Supervised Experience
  • Supervision for no less than 12 months, 1,000 hours
  • must include 200 hours of clinical supervision in no less than 2 years
Step 3: Pass Required Exams
  • Apply to take the AMFTRB National MFT Exam
  • Exam fee $365
Step 4: Apply for LMFT Licensure
  • Application Fee $50
  • Submit supervised hours and exam results
  • Submit official transcripts
