Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) 

How to become a social worker 

Step 1: Attain MSW from a CSWE-accredited school
Step 2: Apply for your LMSW License and Pass the ASWB Exam
  • Must be notarized
  • Official college transcripts sent directly from college Registrar to the state board
  • Two (2) references from teachers or supervisors who are familiar with experience in social work
  • Criminal background check
  • Once approved, register with the Association of Social Work Boards for the Masters Level exam, and then set an appointment with Pearson VUE 
  • Unlike many states, in Georgia you can actually begin your supervised work experience after graduation for up to one year while you apply for your LMSW license.
  • Next, take TDC’s LMSW Exam Prep: ASWB Masters Level program to help you pass with confidence! 
Step 3: Apply for the L&E Exam and Pass with confidence! 
  • Complete 3 years of full-time supervised experience in social work. Of these, only the first two must be under direction.
  • Present evidence of having practiced clinical social work for a minimum of 3000 hours post social work master's degree supervised experience acquired over a period of no less than 36 months or more than 108 months
  • The first 2000 hours of experience must be under supervision and direction in the practice of clinical social work. Submit documentation of having acquired 120 hours of supervision during this time, no more than 50% of which may be group supervision and at least 50% must be provided by a licensed clinical social worker who meets requirements to be a duly qualified supervisor
  • Both supervisors and supervisees are required to maintain a contemporaneous record of the date, duration, type (individual, paired, or group), and a brief summary of the pertinent activity for each supervision session to be submitted to the Board upon request. If there are any discrepancies in hours, contemporaneous documentation of supervision will be requested.
  • Registration fee: $100

Continuing Education Requirements

Pre-licensure - Social workers in GA have the same CE requirements as Licensed Social workers.
License Renewal
  • Renewal Cycle: Every 2 years (Must be renewed by September 30 of each EVEN year)
  • Total Hours Required: 35 hours
  • Must include:
  • 5 hours professional ethics education (in person)
  • 15 “core” hours (“core” meaning CEs within the speciality of the license)
  • 15 “related” hours (“related” meaning CEs within allied professions)

Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT)

How to become a Marriage & Family Therapist

Step 1: Earn Your Degree
  • Master’s in MFT or related field from COAMFTE approved program
Step 2: Accrue Supervised Experience
  • 2 years of full-time (20 hours per week) supervision
  • minimum of 2,000 hours of direct clinical experience, equivalent amount of part-time work
  • 100 hours of direct supervision, with a minimum of 50 hours with individuals
Step 3: Pass Required Exams
  • Apply to take the AMFTRB National MFT Exam
  • Exam fee $365
  • Sign up for TDC’s NMFT exam prep course to study with confidence!
Step 4: Apply for LMFT Licensure
  • Submit official transcripts 
  • Submit supervised hours 
  • Submit exam results
  • Notarized application fee $110

  • 10 hours online allowed
