Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) 

How to become a social worker 

Step 1: Complete a CSWE-accredited Social Work program
Step 2: Apply for LMSW and Pass the Licensing Exam
  • Create an online account with the state department and apply for approval to take the Master’s Level exam ONLINE. Includes:
  • Official transcript sent directly from your accredited school to the CT Department of Public Health
  • Submission of a passport photo
  • Pay the application fee of $220
Step 3: Get Your Hours
  • After passing the LMSW, complete 3,000 hours of paid post-masters work experience 
  • no less than 100 of these hours are under professional supervision by a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) or certified independent social worker
  • Once your hours are complete, the Supervisor must complete the following two forms and send them directly to the CT Department of Public Health.
  • Finally, once submitted, complete your application and pay the $315 fee
Step 4: Register with the ASWB and Start Studying!
  • Once state approved, reach out to the ASWB and Pearson VUE again to get registered and set LCSW exam appointment

Continuing Education Requirements

Pre-licensure - Social workers in CT have the same CE requirements as Licensed Social workers.
License Renewal
  • Renewal Cycle: Each year, by the 1st day of licensee’s birth month
  • Total Hours Required: 15 hours
  • Must include: 1 hour Cultural Competency
  • Every 6 years: 2 hours of mental health conditions common to veterans and family members of veterans

Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT)

How to become a Marriage & Family Therapist

Step 1: Earn Your Degree
  • Master’s in MFT or related field from COAMFTE or Board equivalent program
Step 2: Accrue Supervised Experience
  • Practicum must consist of 500 direct clinical hours, 100 of which must be clinical supervision
  • Minimum 24 months of supervised post-graduate work experience 
  • Minimum of 1,000 hours of direct clinical contact
  • 100 hours direct supervision by LMFT
  • 50 hours individual supervision 
Step 3: Pass Required Exam
  • Apply to take the AMFTRB National MFT Exam
  • Exam fee $365

Step 4: Apply for LMFT Licensure
  • Submit supervised hours and exam results
  • Submit background check
  • Application for licensure fee $315

Continuing Education Requirements

  • Total Hours Required: 15 hours
  • Must include:
  • 1 hour cultural competency
  • 2 hours every 6 years on veterans and veterans mental health issues including screening for PTSD and suicide prevention
  • 15 hours online allowed
